DTK Memorial 7 @ I-37 Speedway 10/23-25/25
By JM Hallas
Pleasanton Tx., (Oct. 25th, 2025) Honoring Great Men…..

Over night rain showers made for a whole new track for the second night of the 7th Annual DTK Memorial. Whatever worked on the drier slick track last night may probably not be very good for the heavier Saturday night track in the LCQ's. Crews did a good job blading all the muck off the top to the point where the track actually needed some water. During the later features it would rubber up a top and bottom lane.

A recap from yesterday saw four drivers from the heats and top four from the qualifiers in the Late Models, IMCA Modifieds, Limited Modifieds, Factory Stocks, Fireballs and Sport Compacts make their way to the features. In the E-Mods the top 8 transferred from their A-main Friday.

Heat and Qualifier winners were; Aaron Leddy, Robby Minten, Cody Leonard, (Late Models), Jared Maupin, Johnny Torres, Steven Whiteaker jr., (IMCA Modifieds), Marcus Mikulencak, James Cole, Trent Beaver, (Limited Modifieds), Dillon Gaither, Allen Torres, Jared Maupin, Talon Minten, (Factory Stocks), Dillon Gaither, Zach Freeman, GW Hessong, Mickey Helms(Fireballs), Stephen Stiteler, Layne Riley, Blake Andrus (Sport Compacts). In the E-Mods, taking the top 8 to the feature, Zachary Calhoun took the victory.

Due to short car counts in several classes track officials revised the Saturday procedures. The Fireballs, Factory Stocks and Sport Compacts would be the only classes to run Last Chance Qualifiers to finish setting the feature fields. Late Models, Modifieds, and Limited Modifieds. would line up by qualifier finishes behind the top 2 Friday heat winners. The E-mods would run heats to fill the remaining spots based on finish results.

Leonard Lands Late Model Money
The 25-lap Late Model main saw Kody Hardage get the run off turn 2 to get the early lead over Ryan Doyon, Jared Maupin, Cody Leonard and Matt Fox. Leonard worked his way by Maupin for third while Aaron Leddy snagged fifth from Fox. With Hardage pulling away, the laps clicked off quickly coming to halfway ahead of R. Doyon, Leonard, Maupin and Leddy.

Doyon and Leonard were reeling in Hardage when Ray Doyon spun in turn 2 for a lap 15 yellow that rebunched the field. On the restart Leddy took an agricultural trip over the turn 2 hill into the weeds. As green waved again, Leonard grabbed second from R. Doyon. Leonard closed on Hardage looking low and finally made his way by Hardage for the top spot.

In the final five circuits Hardage began to fade quickly hemorrhaging spots to R. Doyon and Robby Minten. Up front Leonard had clear sailing to the checkers in the Chris Swenson owned, Smileys, On Demand Shirts, All in Design, 366 Motorsports, DB Insurance, Swenson Racing Products, QA1 Shocks, VP Racing Fuel, Farm & Ranch, Daytona 1 Performance Lubricants, Ingram Race Engines, Swenson Racing Chassis.

“More than likely without that yellow I didn't have anything for them.” said Leonard. “We got into a flow state there and just kind of cruising in third. I could smell hot water and coolant from someone in front of me. They were getting hot. I looked at my temp gauge and it wasn't me. I saw (Kody) Hardage slowing up some. Ryan(Doyon) and I were able to reel him in. It got kind of dicey in traffic. I didn't think I was ever going to get it.”

“Early on I used the bottom just to test it out. Looking at the track and using what I learned early in the race I knew I had a pretty decent shot. I'd take a good slide line just to keep momentum up on that restart.”

“Most of the field is top notch. You have to look for everyone, they're all quick. It's a big difference in my driving style between the Late Model and the Modified. The Modified is more on edge with the smaller tire, there's a lot more throttle control. The Late Model is more forgiving and the throttle is more forgiving.”

“We're done with the Late Model for this year I think. I've got a few more races left with the Modified and Stock Car. I think it's Waco next week, TMS Dirt Track with the Longhorn car and the big Corpus will be it for us.”

Win for Whiteaker in Modified Main
Once again the two Dinsmore brothers found themselves side by side for the start of the 25-lap IMCA Modified feature. It took three tries to get the start right with Logan Dinsmore getting
ahead of Cameron Dinsmore. Jared Maupin, Steven Whiteaker jr. and Johnny Torres. C. Dinsmore made his past L. Dinsmore for the lead on lap 2. Whiteaker got by Maupin and got alongside L. Dinsmore for second.

Once securing second, Whiteaker began looking high on C. Dinsmore in turns 3-4. The next lap Whiteaker was able to make his way past C. Dinsmore for the lead. Once clear, Whiteaker began to steadily pull away as he reached the crossed flags ahead of L. Dinsmore, C. Dinsmore Maupin and Johnny Torres in the top. Robby Minten would spin in turn 2 for a lap 13 caution.

Whiteaker easily cleared the three wide fight for second between the Dinsmore bothers and Maupin. On the restart Maupin went around in turn 4 nearly taking out Torres as well. Once back to green, Torres got under C. Dinsmore for third as Maupin quickly made way his back up. Up front Whiteaker(Robstown) get several car lengths on L. Dinsmore going on take the victory in his On Demand Shirts, DS&S Construction, Supreme Vinyl Works, Mike Terry Motorsports, Rush Racegear by Austin Witt, WW Bodies, Wehrs, 8T1 Construction, SRC Carburetors, FK Rod Ends, AT21 Components, Tru-Form, Nasty Cookers, 4S Starry Ranch, Best Engines, CDR by 89 Motorsports Chassis.

“ Once we got going I think everybody was trying to get to the top as fast as they could,” replied Whiteaker. “I enjoyed seeing Cameron(Dinsmore) up front. He's a good kid and fun to hang out with. The Dinsmores have helped me out a lot this year. Logan has been fast this year too. I expected Johnny(Torres) to be a little better on the start than he was. I was just rolling the bottom and I could see Cameron was not going to come off the bottom. So I just went to the top and let 'er eat from there.”

“You just have to expect somebody to be there once you get the lead. You can't really see anyone. I'll look for some signals from my dad. No one gave me a heads up that I had a big gap. I was just trying to be consistent, and make laps. Even I miss my marks occasionally.”

“We're always ready any time we go someplace. It's best to be as prepared as possible. I can't really say that I'm more prepared for any track or another. I feel like, if I'm not prepared, that I really shouldn't be going. We try to always be ready, sometimes we hit, sometimes we don't.

“I won't be headed back to TMS Dirt Track for that big race. I drove Brett Vauble car up there a few weeks ago. There were a lot of fast cars there, kind of makes me want to go back to USRA racing. We'll be getting our car ready for the big Sparkling City Classic in Corpus during December. I hear there may be some races coming around here in January too. We want to be ready for them too.”

“I would love for Steven III to be more consistent so I can get out the car. Jace wants to race too. He taken over the 89 number in his sports and raced a couple times. I assume that one day Steven III and Jace will take over racing and I'll just crew for them.”

Neill Nails it for Limited Mod Money
Chase Neill jumped out to the lead of the 25-lap Limited Modified feature on green. Marcus Mikulencak, James Cole, Johnny Torres and Ryder Egbert fell in line behind. Mikulencak began to look low on Neill, but yellow waved on lap 3 after Tripp Whitmire spun collecting Steven Whiteaker III. Under green again, Cole and Mikulencak were swapping second with Egbert taking fourth from Torres.

Neill got some breathing room as the scrapping continued for second and fourth. Logan Densman launched over the nose of Steven Whiteaker III for a lap 8 yellow that collected Tom Grouthes. Neill again got clear on green with Cole, Mikulencak and Torres now battling for second. At halfway it was Neill, Cole, Torres, Mikulencak and Egbert in the top five. Trent Beaver broke into the top five getting past Egbert on lap 13.

Torres finally made his way around Cole for second, about a half straightaway behind Neill. Matt Rust stopped the back stretch for a lap 20 caution erasing Neill's lead. Neil got a couple car lengths as green waved again, with Beaver getting spots from Mikulencak and Cole. At the finish line it was Neill(Burleson) taking the victory in the Dustin LeMaster owned, LeMaster Custom Pools, Best Engine powered 2017 Hughes Chassis..

“We were looking at lap times on practice night,” said Neill. “The top four of us were fast, I was off a little. This is just my third night in this car. But, yes these guys down here are fast. We've been dialing it in little by little. I'm just happy to be here and be able to finish. I've had about twelve DNFs in fifteen races this year. That $1,000 paycheck makes it better.”

“I've been here about three times before in a Late Model. I came close to winning one of those, I led a few laps and just didn't lead the right lap. We normally run Kennedale, Waco and Boyd. I ran Sport Mods before, then we did some Stock Car stuff and the Late Model, unfortunately we blew the that up.”

A-Main (25 Laps): 1. 7L-Chase Neill[2]; 2. 15T-Johnny Torres[3]; 3. 14-Trent Beaver[5]; 4. 14C-James Cole[4]; 5. 26-Logan Densman[13]; 6. 78-Ryder Egbert[6]; 7. 822-Clint Everage[9]; 8. 101-Tripp Whitmire[8]; 9. 503-Carl Reusser[10]; 10. 17X-Tyler Cook[11]; 11. 12R-Roland Rodriguez[12]; 12. Preston Pockets E-Mod Payday
Zachary Calhoun and Caden Valente stayed side by into turn 1 as the 20-lap E-Mod feature took the green. Calhoun got the advantage off turn 2, but a multi-car tangle in the pack brought about a complete restart. The second try saw the Calhoun-Valente duo again wheel to wheel, but it took to turn 3 for Calhoun to secure the lead. Valente fell in line second ahead of Brianna Witzsche, Daniel Preston and David Moore.

Moore and Preston both got by Witzsche for second and third. Valente was looking low on Calhoun for the lead, with Preston and Moore closing. On lap 5 the top four were running nose to tail. Preston got alongside Moore for third as they approached halfway. Before the midway point Cameron Schmidt would spin to bring out a lap caution. As green waved, Preston sailed around the high side to grab the lead.

At the crossed flags it was Preston, Calhoun, Valente, Moore and Tripp Whitmire making his way to the top five. Moore tried the outside of Valente, but slipped high giving up fourth to Whitmire. By lap 15 Preston had gapped Calhoun, while Johnny Torres and Witzsche battled for fifth. Preston(Corpus Christi) scored the win in his Greys Recycling, First Class Towing, WRT, WW Bodies, Rush Gear by Austin Witt, T2 Aeronautics, Dark Horse Racing Shocks, ProLine Fabrication, Bulldog 3D Printing, Maurer Missle Rubber, Wicked Fast Transmissions, All in Designs, crate powered 2018 Hughes by 89 Motorsports Chassis.

***Team Texana wins the E-Mod Trilogy challenge.

“The outside was there all night,” exclaimed Preston. “I know in this class everyone usually goes to the bottom or middle. I knew the outside would be wide open. I went up there and passed a couple cars early, then kind of made my way down to the middle, passed some more cars and got it done. I went from eighth to lead getting held up a lot. Once I got to the lead I opened it up and it started rolling. So I knew if someone was able to get to me, that they couldn't get around me on the top. It was a rocket ship tonight.”

“These cars have a lot less motor than a Limited Modified. We've got less tire, their a tick off the pace of a Sport Modified. It's a good, affordable class. I love it, it's what I can afford to race.

“Texana was offering extra money if that team won the challenge. So a majority of the cars picked Texana as their home track despite being closer to one of the other tracks.”

Hefti Out Hustles Factory Stock Field in Final Laps
As the 25-car, 25-lap Factory Stock field took the green Tim Homeyer and Matthew Hollensbe had separate spins. On the next try young, out-of-towner, Jett Hefti got out front ahead of Dillon Gaither, Jared Maupin, Dylan Kowalik and Allen Torres. Gaither quickly got by Hefti for the lead bringing Maupin along to second. In the pack Brandon Welker, M. Hollensbe and Hunter Peterson were three wide for eighth.

Hefti fought back getting beside Maupin for second running door to door as they came to halfway. At the crossed flags it was Gaither, Maupin, Hefti and Torres still in the top five. Maupin caught Gaither hung in traffic getting by for the lead leaving him side by side with Hefti for second going three wide in traffic before Hefti got the position. Torres followed shuffling Gaither back another spot.

Lap 19 saw the red flag when M. Hollensbe spun and H. Peterson clipped him and spun into the wall. Both were checked by on-site EMS. On the restart Torres clipped the wall while Maupin and Hefti got away. Maupin had gotten away to about six cars as the white was ready to be shown but caution waved. As green waved for the final two laps Hefti took a look low off turn 2 getting beside Maupin. Coming to take the white Hefti(Kent) completed the pass and held for the win in the CRS Suspension, Cat Contractors, Dirt Defender, 121 Towing, Piranha Race Tires, Wizard Works, Wackys Speed Shop, Synergy, Mitchell Electric, PJ Industries, Wicked Fast Transmissions, Pulse Racing, Americas Best Garage Door Service, Best Race Engine, Rocket Chassis,

“I knew Jared is always fast,'” replied Hefti. “My dad and I went back and watched some of the RaceOn videos to get an idea on what to do and who would be fast. I figured I was going to be a second place car all weekend. We were going to race at RPM Speedway back up around home, but they got rained out. We saw that there was a race down here so we made the four hour trip.”

“I wanted to get and hold the lead on the first lap and that didn't work out. Towards the end I found my line and was getting faster. I've been racing since I was nine in Tuner cars. This is my first year in a Factory Stock. The past couple races I've been getting pretty good at it. I think we will look at getting a Stock Car.”

Hessong Holds on After Late Caution in Fireball Frenzy
Zach Freeman jumped out to the early lead in the 20-lap Fireball feature chased by Eric Ramos, both in trucks, Levi Hernandez, GW Hessong and Sammy Smith. Dillon Gaither was able to get by Smith, with Mickey Helms trying to get both until a debris caution on lap 3. Back to green, Hessong, Hernandez and Helms were three wide until more parts were shed on the track. This time Hernandez got the jump on Ramos for second.

Hessong was next to put Ramos back a spot while DJ Schroat got fifth from Helms. Hernandez was trying to get under Freeman for the lead but Hessong had other plans getting by both for the top spot on lap 9. At halfway it was Hessong, D. Gaither, Freeman, Hernandez and Helms in the top five. Hernandez and Helms make contact while battling with both making contact with the wall and Hernandez spinning in turn 2 with a flat for a lap 11 yellow.

The top three got away on green with Schroat grabbing fourth from Ramos. Lance Gaither and Howie Marcx found themselves hung up together on lap 15 to slow the pace. Hessong started to ease away for the final fives laps but coming to the white flag, Hernandez looped it again, setting up a two lap shootout. Hessong(Edna) got clear with D. Gaither and Freeman door to door for second leaving him unchallenged to the checkers in the Tonys Mobile Home Service, Mickeys Auto Repair, Titan Factory Direct, in-house motor in a retired asphalt chassis.

“We definitely sent it tonight,” commented Hessong. “I turned car this way because it doesn't look too healthy on the other side. This is a brand new car that Tony Blankenship just built. It's turned out to be really good. First nights out on the car, gets the win.”

“We raced three wide? I saw a bunch of people, but never saw anybody at the same time. I was just trying to get to the front in a hurry before all the chaos broke loose. The way the car felt I wasn't really concerned that someone could get past me.”

“In the final laps I just knew something was breaking. The left rear shock is hanging off the car, banging on the ground. The left rear was going flat. Under that red the car was smoking a bit. It would start loading up under caution, die, blow coolant out of it for some reason. Just part of the new car deal. We'll get it figured out. So we got lucky.”

Andrus Aces Sport Compact
Josh Jones jumped out front in the 20-lap Sport Compact feature leaving them battling four wide for third. As they sorted out it was Steven Stiteler leading over Jones, Shaun Tracy, Blake Andrus and Fons Ponsioen. Andrus was able to get side by side with Tracy. Lap 2 saw a serious crash that brought the red out after Tracy got turned, and started rolling in turn 4. The pack came in at speed trying to dodge Tracy, but he was hit hard while upside down. After careful extraction he was transported to the hospital. It was reported on Sunday that he was released and home. Great news after that vicious crash.

**** I got stuck in the pits with other duties and missed the resumption of the feature. I hear it was another one of those outta towners, Andres(Sweetwater), coming down and battling with Stiteler(Alvord) for the win taking the locals lunch money again in the Signs by Danny, Queso Motorsports, Texas Master Tune, Mystic Texas Mamas, Mach Ten Services, Lanes Automotive Machine Shop, 04 Cavalier.

“We came back to have a good time,” commented Andrus. “We didn't have a good showing back in April when we were here. We wanted to come back and have a good showing at least once. A little redemption, little friendly rivalry. My buddy Stephen(Stiteler) had a bad night then too so he was battling as hard as I was.”

“Luckily I was a car length in front of that big wreck. My wife unfortunately was caught up in it. It was one of those things with nowhere to go. It's unfortunate. I hope that (Shaun)Tracy is alright. We got her car back to the trailer and we'll have some work to do over the winter on that one. It is what it is, it's racing.”

“After that first restart we got a good green flag run. Once we caught lapped traffic we started slicing and dicing. It got a bit sketchy when Stephen and I came up a pack of four cars battling and had to run three wide but two groups of two. Another caution came out and kind of calmed both of our nerves.”

“On that second restart I got a good jump on the guy outside and was able to hold second. Stephen and I door banged a little to try to settle out for the lead. Stephen and I have some back and forth banging, leaning on each other. I did a little leaning on him and I was waiting for him to repay me on the last lap. I was able to 'park the bus' good enough to not give him the chance.

“Most of the time we all hang together. Stephen has a three-car hauler so we loaded up all three and headed down here at 60mph and 300-some miles. We try to do our research before come here. We have a good idea who all the fast guys are. Then we have the ones to look out for, speed wise. They're a big family and I don't blame them. They're just out here to have fun and make memories together. That's how my wife and I started out. We were fortunate enough to fall in with the right people that helped us.”

“I've got thank my wife, she makes more money than me and pays the bills. Mine goes into being able for us to come out and do this.”
